Our trunk being arrived we dressed Ourselves & went to the Captain General to deliver our Letter of Recommendation & ask permission to perform. He lives without the Gates of the City in the ancient Palace called El Real where the Kings of Valentia formerly resided: here, after having given the Letter to a Page, we waited in a long and Spacious Hall, round which hang the pictures of the Vice-roys, & Captain Generals of Valentia, in their order of Succession from the 12th or 13th Century down to this present Count of Sayve who is a Frenchman.226 He assoon as he received Our Letter (notwithstanding he was at dinner) rose up immediately & came to us in the Hall where he very courteously received us, promised us his protection, & gave us License to perform; the regulation of which (as he was very old) he left to the care of the Corregidor,227 or the Lord Mayor who told us to seek a proper place suitable to our intentions, mean while he would acquaint the Court of Aldermen & give the necessary orders; but that we must also agree with the Director of the Hospital to which we should be obliged to give a contribution. But first of all we went to deliver our other Letters of Recommendation to the several Noblemen to whom they were directed; and at one of their Houses we happen’d of an Italian who play’d slight of hand,228 & who finding what we were going about, very kindly offer’d his Service (as we were strangers) to accompany us about the city where we should have occasion to go till we could get our Business done: we thankfully accepted his offer, & he went with us to the Hospital where after wrangling a long time about settling the contribution for which they refused to take a sixth part of the product, the price being at One shilling per person, which would consequently come to two pence per person for their share, but they were such wretched arithmeticians, that rather than do so they agreed to take one penny per Person which was but just half the money, & we Sign’d the agreement accordingly.

Then according to our custom we went up to the top of the cathedral steeple to take a view of the city, and finding it very large we thought it would answer our purpose to inclose a Place with Boards without the City, not being able to finding any inclosure or waste Ground within the Walls, but still the Corregidor objected against several places that would conveniently have suited us.

But at last having pitch’d upon a piece of Waste ground lying between the River & the nunnery of Zaydia, he after mature deliberation, and diligent Search Made in the archives of the city, concerning the Rights & priviledges thereof, sign’d a decree to our petition, permitting us to Build thereon, which however involved him in a great deal of trouble.
